What is TIG welding?

TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), also called GTAW, strikes an arc between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece, shielded by an inert gas (usually argon). Filler metal is added separately by hand with a rod, so you control heat and filler independently.

The result is a clean, precise, spatter-free weld with excellent control — ideal for stainless steel, mild steel and aluminium, thin sheet, pipe and visible joints where appearance and quality matter. TIG is slower than MMA or MIG, but it produces the highest-quality finish.

AC/DC TIG note for aluminium

This is the single most important thing to get right. DC TIG welds steel and stainless steel — but it will not weld aluminium. Aluminium needs AC (alternating current) TIG, because the AC cleaning action breaks up the tough oxide layer on the metal's surface as you weld.

So if aluminium (or magnesium) is on your job list, choose an AC/DC machine such as the 555 TIG 200 AC/DC, 315 AC/DC or 400 AC/DC. If you only weld steel and stainless, a DC TIG machine is simpler and more cost-effective. Not sure? Ask Towam →

Before you choose

Model specifications, duty cycle, AC/DC capability, tungsten capacity, gas requirements, IP rating, warranty and stock availability vary by model. Towam can confirm the correct 555 TIG machine based on material (steel, stainless or aluminium), thickness, power input and site condition. TIG also needs shielding gas (typically argon) and the right tungsten and torch setup — ask us and we'll spec the full kit.
