VRD Welding Safety Explained

What VRD does
Between welds, a stick machine still has voltage at the electrode — the open-circuit voltage (OCV), often 50–70V. In dry conditions that is generally safe, but sweat, humidity, rain, or working inside tanks and structures lowers your body's resistance and raises the shock risk. VRD holds the idle voltage down to a low, safe value (typically under ~20V) and only switches to full welding voltage when it senses you striking the arc. You get safety at rest and full performance when welding.
Why it matters in the UAE
Gulf site work means heat, heavy sweating, and humidity — exactly the conditions where OCV shock risk rises. Confined-space and structural work compounds it. VRD is a simple, automatic safeguard that many budget machines omit. On the 555 ARC 250 GT the VRD holds idle voltage at 18V against a 70V welding OCV.
VRD at a glance
| State | Voltage at electrode | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Idle (not welding) | ~18V (VRD active) | Reduced shock risk |
| Welding | Full OCV (e.g. 70V) restored on strike | Reliable arc starts & performance |
Frequently asked questions
Does VRD make the welder harder to strike?
No — it restores full voltage the moment it detects a strike, so arc starting is unaffected. You only ever experience the reduced voltage when idle.
Is VRD required by law?
It is mandated or strongly recommended in many jurisdictions and on many industrial sites, particularly for work in damp or confined conditions. Check your site's safety requirements.
Which 555 machines have VRD?
The ARC 250 GT includes VRD (18V). Ask us which other models in your shortlist are VRD-equipped.
Do I still need normal welding precautions?
Yes — VRD reduces idle-voltage shock risk but does not replace dry gloves, good earthing, PPE and safe practice.
